The Distinguished Sea Service Awards are given “to recognize the exemplary service of a senior flag officer and senior enlisted member of one of the maritime services, who has finished a continuous career of active service.” Sergeant Major Angela Maness, USMC (Ret.), is one of 2018's honored recipients.

The Senior Enlisted Distinguished Sea Service Award was formally presented during our annual Congress in San Antonio, Texas.

Angela M. Maness joined the Marine Corps in June of 1987. She graduated as the platoon honor recruit in September 1987 from Oscar Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina.

In October 1987, Lance Cpl. Maness reported to Camp Johnson, North Carolina, for Administrative School to serve as a service record book clerk. She was meritoriously promoted to the rank of corporal in May 1988. In July 1990, she was meritoriously promoted to the rank of sergeant and received orders to Maintenance Battalion, 2nd Force Service Support Group, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, for duty as the administrative chief.

She volunteered for drill instructor duty in January 1992. After completing Drill Instructor School at Parris Island, she was immediately assigned to 4th Recruit Training Battalion where she served as an Oscar Company drill instructor for 24 months. In October 1994, she was promoted to staff sergeant and received orders to Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia. As permanent personnel there, she held the billets of administrative chief, sergeant instructor, platoon sergeant and physical training instructor until December 1998 when she was promoted to gunnery sergeant and received orders to 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3rd Force Service Support Group, Okinawa, Japan, for duty as the adjutant.

In January 2000, Gunnery Sgt. Maness was ordered to Marine Aircraft Group 24, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. In March 2003, 1st Sgt. Maness checked into Range Company, Weapons and Field Training Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. In August 2005, she received orders to Oscar Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, aboard the depot.

She was selected for sergeant major in December 2006 and received orders to 2nd Marine Logistics Group, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, where she served as the battalion sergeant major for Combat Logistics Battalion 8. Upon checking into CLB 8 in March 2007, she deployed to Camp Fallujah, Iraq, from August 2007 to March 2008 and then to Camp Leatherneck and Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan, from May to October 2009.

In January 2010, she was ordered to Combat Logistics Battalion 3, Combat Logistics Regiment 3, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, where she deployed to Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan, from September 2010 to April 2011. She reported to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, in April 2012, where she served as the station sergeant major.

She reported to Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., in June 2013 for duty as sergeant major at the “oldest post of the Corps.” In November 2014, she became the depot sergeant major of Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island.

Sgt. Maj. Maness’ personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award.
